Arnold ‘Doc’ Roper started racing Hobby cars in 1988, having 100% attendance for the first 6 years. Doc served as club President for 3 years, Vice-President for 1 year and Secretary for 3 years. During his terms as president, he changed the name of the club from the traditional ‘Hobby Club’ to the Canadian Vintage Modifieds as we are known today. As well as sponsoring the club for more than 20 years, Doc was responsible for starting the ‘Race Winner’ stickers that drivers get after winning a race. He was always proud to say that he built his cars, he didn’t buy them, and was willing to lend them to up and coming drivers to get their starts in racing. Doc shared his love of racing with his wife Wendy, who also served as club Secretary for 4 years. One of his proudest moments was being inducted into the Hobby Hall of Fame at the club’s annual banquet. Sadly on February 2nd, 2010, Doc lost his long battle with cancer. Doc will forever be remembered as one who gave back to the fans and will be greatly missed by everyone throughout the Canadian Vintage Modifieds and stock car racing in Southern Ontario. |
